DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 28, 2009) – The Davenport Speedway brought down the curtain on the 2009 points season Friday. Several inches of rain during the week made the racing surface soft and tacky for the season finale.
The Track Tamer Engines IMCA Late Models were racing for both the track championship and the national title, as the top three in national points, Kevin Blum, Terry Neal, and Ray Guss Jr. were all in action. Guss came into the evening as the leader in track points and started the 25-lap feature on the pole. Guss led the first four laps, before letting Blum get under him and take the lead. Neal, who had started 17th, had worked his way up to tenth, before pulling into the pits.

Iowa Speedweek: A Learning Experience

By Meredith Breuer

Though I have attended many sprint car races throughout my life, none have taught me quite so much as the ones that did, and did not, take place during Iowa Speedweek 2009.

My adventure started on Saturday, August 8th with the 360 Nationals at Knoxville Raceway. With temperatures in the 90’s most of the day, sitting in a hot grandstand was not really something I was looking forward to.  But as the sun went down, the racing heated up, and I learned that even when sitting in a puddle of my own sweat, I still appreciate the power of the cars as they zoom around the track; especially when there is a lady behind the wheel. Enter Erin Crocker.

With Jason Feger drawing the pole position for the forty lap Monster Midwest Series UMP Late Model main event it was a forgone conclusion that the check should have already been made out before the event even began as Feger has been on a terror as of late winning his last two events on Friday and Saturday but as they say, “it over until the fat lady sings.”

dsc_1640BURLINGTON, Iowa (August 22, 2009) – A touching tribute to the late Brian Hetrick highlighted a night that saw Kaley Gharst and Donnie Steward both take feature wins on “Night of the Twins” at the 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa Saturday. Gharst’s win came aboard the Plath Motorsports #14P, while Steward won in the Heartland Harley Davidson #16HD._
Gharst’s win came in the first feature, as he led from wire to wire in the 20-lapper. The “Four-wide Salute to the Fans” preceding the event included a moment of silence for Hetrick, and for Justin Parrish’s crewmember, Pete Williams, who passed away this week. The race was marred by several cautions, but Gharst was unaffected and undeterred in winning his fourth feature with the series in 2009.
